Revolutionizing Women’s Golf in Naples: The Azalea Golf Club

In the heart of Southwest Florida, where golf courses are as abundant as sunshine, a transformative movement is gaining momentum — one that creates a welcoming space for women not only to enjoy golf but also to build lasting friendships, advance professionally, and redefine their place in the golf world.

The Azalea Golf Club, a women’s golf and social network co-founded by Leah Semethy and Ilyssa Alvarez, is reshaping the golfing landscape in Naples — and the journey is just beginning.

A Vision Comes to Life

Leah Semethy’s journey to founding The Azalea Golf Club began when she relocated from Lakewood Ranch to Naples in 2024. With a background in golf and a passion for fostering connections among women, Leah quickly noticed a void in the community. Despite Naples’ reputation as the “Golf Capital of the World,” opportunities for women to bond over the sport were limited.

Leah envisioned a place where women of all skill levels could not only enjoy the game but also form meaningful connections, both personally and professionally. “The goal was to create a space where women could come together to improve their game, build lasting friendships, and connect through networking events,” she explains. This vision led her to partner with Ilyssa Alvarez, a skilled marketer and founder of Ilign Marketing Agency. Together, they co-founded The Azalea Golf Club in September 2024, offering a blend of golf and social events that promote a sense of community among its members.

The club’s name, “Azalea,” holds deep significance. Inspired by the iconic 13th hole at Augusta National Golf Club, home of the prestigious Masters Tournament, the name embodies tradition, excellence, and class — values the founders want their club to reflect.

Breaking Down Barriers

In a sport traditionally dominated by men, Leah and Ilyssa often encountered resistance. Women in the golf world have long faced skepticism about their place on the course. Leah recalls numerous instances of being dismissed or interrupted by men offering unsolicited advice. “It’s frustrating, but it fueled our determination to keep showing up,” she says.

A defining moment came during a practice range event when over 20 women attended. As the session progressed, more men left, and by the end, the entire range was filled with women. “It was a powerful moment that showed just how much we’re changing the game,” Leah smiles. This moment reinforced the club’s mission: to create a community where women don’t just belong but thrive.

A Community Beyond Golf

At its core, The Azalea Golf Club is about more than just the sport. Leah and Ilyssa are committed to fostering connections that extend beyond the course. By partnering with local businesses, the club hosts regular events focused on wellness and community engagement. They organize two social events each month, as well as health and wellness gatherings to support both physical and mental well-being.

“Staying connected with local businesses is a priority for us, and we’re committed to supporting them just as we would hope to be supported,” Leah says.

These partnerships offer club members opportunities to connect with local restaurants, boutiques, and fitness centers, creating a community that extends far beyond the fairways.

Stories of Growth and Empowerment

As The Azalea Golf Club continues to expand, Leah and Ilyssa have seen the club’s impact on its members. One founding member, a former Division 1 college golfer, shared how she had grown disillusioned with the game after years of competition. The Azalea Golf Club reignited her passion for golf and introduced her to a supportive community of women. “Not only did The Azalea Golf Club make me love golf again, but it also introduced me to a community of amazing girls and blossomed new friendships,” she shared.

For Leah, these stories are the heart of the club’s mission: creating a space where women feel supported and empowered, regardless of their skill level. “Simply put, it’s a place for women in Southwest Florida to network, enjoy the game of golf, and have fun,” Leah says.

Expanding Horizons

As The Azalea Golf Club approaches its six-month milestone, its growth has exceeded all expectations. Women from across the country are expressing interest in establishing their own chapters of the club, a testament to the universal appeal of this community.

“We have already had a few women reach out inquiring about wanting to expand The Azalea Golf Club to their city, so we definitely see this happening in the near future,” Leah shares.

Looking ahead, the club hopes to grow beyond Florida, creating a nationwide network of women who share a love for golf and want to connect with others who understand their passion. The Azalea Golf Club isn’t just another golf group — it’s a movement that’s changing how women engage with the sport. Leah and Ilyssa have cultivated a space where women can come together, support one another, and celebrate their shared love for golf. It’s a community where the game is just the beginning, and the lasting connections made on and off the course are what truly matter.
